CJ 2123 - Federal Law Enforcement


In. the United States, there are an estimated 800,000 sworn law enforcement officers working for nearly 1 8,000 agencies. While host law enforcement is performed at the state, county and municipal, federal law enforcement, which employs approximately 105,000 officers and agents, arguably gets the lion’s share of media and entertainment attention. Introduction to Federal Law Enforcement identifies the nearly one hundred different federal agencies which have law enforcement functions of one type or another, ranging &om the Federal Bureau of Investigation to the Secret Service to the Railroad Retirement Board to the Smithsonian Institute. This class will cover the position titles such as Special Agent, Police Officer and Park Ranger, and their job duties, as well as basic qualifications, the background investigation, training, as well as the on-going arguments and controversies of the size, jurisdiction and make-up of federal law enforcement. The myths of federal law enforcement as opposed to the reality will also be discussed.
