CJ 3110 - Philosophical Issues in Criminal Law


The purpose of this course is to analyze historical and current controversies and social justice issues that arise in connection to the criminal justice system and criminal law from a philosophical and ethical standpoint. Students will explore the nature of criminal punishment and law as well as the often ethical and moral dilemmas faced by criminal justice stakeholders. Students will develop an understanding of criminal responsibility, harm, and the extent to which human rights are protected and impacted by the criminal law. Topic areas include the death penalty, Stand Your Ground laws, the decriminalization of marijuana, among others.
