MPP 6041 - Writing and Communication for the Non-Profit, Private and Public Sector

The norms and goals of policy writing are different than those of academic, creative and many forms of persuasive writing, in that they are rooted in the needs and requirements of policy professionals and policy academics. This course provides public policy students with a significant opportunity to develop and enhance their policy writing, graduate writing and communication skills while providing a comprehensive review of how public policy is shaped by social, political, and economic factors and written, visual (multi-media) and social network communications. Students will be engaged throughout the course, both as readers and critical analysts, and as writers and discussion leaders, on public policy topics, including, environmental issues, food shortage, poverty, social inequities, tax incentives and homelessness. These will be viewed within the context of three sectors, the Non-profit, Private and Public Sectors.
