EN 4120 - Author/Auteur

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a major author in possession of a sizeable canon of literary works must be in want of a college course. And it is also true that no English writer but Shakespeare has enjoyed so much critical approval and popular acclaim as Jane Austen. This course provides an in-depth survey of the life and works of Jane Austen based on close readings of her six published novels, beginning with Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice, continuing on to Mansfield Park and Emma, and concluding with Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, as well as some of her lesser known works. The course will likewise pay special attention to the critical tradition that has attended the growth of Austen scholarship and Austenmania, as well as the various forms Austen’s life and literary have been represented on film, on stage, and throughout modern popular culture. 3 hours Lecture and Discussion - 3 credits This course can be substituted for EN 2028 Introduction to Literature.
