EN 3062 - Writing About the Environment

Do you enjoy writing about environmental issues? Featuring colorful messages like, “Not in My Backyard!” and “Don’t Buffalo Me!,” the field of eco-critical writing is vast and intriguing. With topics ranging from protecting the last remaining swaths of pristine wilderness to practicing vertical farming, and contemporary psychological concepts including Biophilia, Nature Deficit Disorder, and Behavioral Sink, eco-critical writing encompasses a truly trans-disciplinary host of interests. Examining the writing approaches and topics of such iconic authors as Bill McKibben, Bill Bryson, Annie Dillard, Aldo Leopold, Tom Wolfe, Terry Tempest Williams, Richard Louv, Barry Lopez, and Joyce Carol Oates, this course introduces you to the environmental writer’s market and provides practice in using distinctive stylistic techniques to engage and persuade your audience. Actual publication venues are discussed in detail, making this course practical for your career ambitions. 3-credits lecture.
