CJ 9905 - Race, Class, Gender & Crime

The purpose of this course is to critically examine crime and victimization in the United States from an intersectional lens. In doing so, we will interrogate how a person’s social location and identity, including one’s race, class, and gender, shapes experiences and interactions with the criminal justice system. Topics covered in this course will include intersectionality, power and privilege, discriminatory sentencing policies and practices, disparate criminal justice outcomes among specific populations within society, mass incarceration, among others. Through the adoption of an intersectional lens, students will develop a critical understanding of (in)justice within the criminal justice system and a greater appreciation for the complexity inherent in relationships between identity, human agency, and crime.
