EN 2230 - Intro to Poetry

The goals for this class focus on the idea that poetry is often imagined as difficult. For this reason, this course will attempt to engage in and answer many of the complicated questions that arise when students are faced with explicating, understanding, and communicating with and through poetry. The course will introduce key concepts and simultaneously introduce some of the most important examples of poetry the world has produced. Students will be tasked with learning a wide variety of poetic concerns-everything from typical poetic conventions (form & meter), to how to read a poem, to the history of poetry, to current arguments about the nature, importance, and value of poetry.
